Local information
Skala Sykamnia belongs to the municipality of Mithimna, it is a small fishing village at the top north part of Lesbos, it is the birthplace of the novelist Stratis Myrivilis (1890 – 1969) who wrote the novel Panagia Gorgona, inspired by the small church of Madonna which has been build on a small rock next to the sea. Skala Sykamnias is one of the most tourist places on the island with many rooms for rent, excellent taverns near the sea serving fresh sea food and beautiful small beaches for swimming. This village is preserved, traditional settlement with wonderful cobbled roads and fantastic view to the Aegean Sea and the Turkish coast.

Transport
There is a reasonably good bus service across the island, especially between Molivos and Mytilini and May to September there is a regular bus service along the coast from Molivos to Petra and Anaxos. There is a taxi rank just outside the town and fares are cheap. A car is really not necessary but if you wish to explore the whole island it would certainly be advantageous. There is a large port in Mytilini with daily sailings to Athens (about 9 hours) and Chios and less frequent sailings to Limnos and Rhodes. Domestic flights to Athens take about 45 minutes (Aegean and Olympic Airways). Direct charter flights from the UK (Gatwick and Manchester) are from May to Mid October on Thursdays (currently First Choice and Excel). Otherwise you have to fly via Athens (Easy jet, Olympic and British Airways). In season the changeover day for rentals is Thursday. There are also direct flights from Holland, Norway and Germany in the summer.
